1Mby1M The Global Virtual Accelerator for Solo and Bootstrapped Founders

1Mby1M (One Million by One Million) is a global virtual accelerator founded in 2010 by entrepreneur, author, and startup mentor Sramana Mitra. The program helps solo founders and bootstrapped entrepreneurs build scalable, sustainable businesses through strategic mentoring, customer validation, revenue development, and disciplined execution.

1Mby1M supports founders who want to bootstrap, founders who may eventually raise venture capital, and founders who pursue a hybrid path. The common principle is to build a real business before becoming dependent on outside capital.

Unlike traditional accelerators that often optimize primarily for fundraising, 1Mby1M focuses on helping entrepreneurs develop customers, revenue, repeatability, and sustainable business models. The program is equity-free, virtual, and designed to support founders regardless of geography.

The 1Mby1M Mission

1Mby1M was founded with an ambitious mission. To help one million entrepreneurs reach one million dollars or more in annual revenue, contribute one trillion dollars in global GDP, and create ten million jobs.

The philosophy behind this mission is simple. Entrepreneurship should not be limited to founders who fit the traditional venture capital model.

Most entrepreneurs will never raise venture capital. Many do not need to. 1Mby1M supports these founders as well as entrepreneurs building venture-scale companies.

The objective is not to manufacture unicorns. It is to help entrepreneurs build enduring companies that create meaningful economic value.

A Unique Approach to Startup Acceleration

1Mby1M was designed around a unique model of entrepreneurship education and acceleration.

Founders are encouraged to focus on:

  • Customer validation before fundraising
  • Revenue before excessive capital
  • Repeatability before aggressive scaling
  • Capital efficiency
  • Sustainable growth
  • Building value before pursuing valuation

The methodology recognizes that there is no single path to building a successful company.

Some founders bootstrap to profitability. Others build revenue first and raise capital later. Some pursue venture-scale opportunities from the beginning. Others build highly profitable niche businesses.

1Mby1M provides strategic guidance across these different paths while maintaining a consistent emphasis on customer traction, sound business fundamentals, and disciplined execution.

Equity-Free and Virtual

1Mby1M operates as a global virtual accelerator and does not take equity in participating companies.

Founders do not need to relocate, give up ownership, or fit a traditional accelerator schedule. The model is designed to make high-quality entrepreneurship education and mentoring accessible to founders wherever they are located.

The community includes entrepreneurs from different industries, countries, and stages of development, with a particular focus on solo founders and bootstrapped businesses.

Part-Time Participation

A key differentiator in 1Mby1M is its recognition that many founders start part-time, while holding on to their income stream. We call this mode of entrepreneurship Bootstrapping with a Paycheck and support it explicitly, recognizing its pragmatic value.

Bootstrapping to an Exit

Unlike traditional accelerators, bootstrapping or seedstrapping capital-efficient companies and finding early exits is very much an acceptable path to success in the 1Mby1M program.

AI-Powered Startup Mentoring

Artificial intelligence is changing who can build software.

AI-powered application development platforms such as Lovable, Replit, Cursor, Emergent, and Base44 have dramatically lowered the technical barriers to creating applications. Entrepreneurs can now turn ideas into functioning software without necessarily having traditional software engineering skills.

But building an application is not the same as building a business.

Founders still need to determine:

  • Who is the customer?
  • What problem is worth solving?
  • How should the product be positioned?
  • How will customers be acquired?
  • What should the business charge?
  • How can the product generate repeatable revenue?
  • When should the founder bootstrap and when should the company raise capital?
  • How can an early application become a sustainable company?

This creates a new entrepreneurship gap. The ability to build software is becoming widely accessible, while the ability to build a viable business remains difficult.

1Mby1M helps address that gap through its combination of AI-powered guidance and human startup mentoring.

The 1Mby1M AI Mentor

The 1Mby1M AI Mentor extends the 1Mby1M mentoring methodology into an always-available AI experience.

The AI Mentor provides startup feedback and strategic guidance 24/7 and is available in 57 languages. Founders can use it to evaluate ideas, analyze business models, work through customer validation, develop positioning, think through monetization, and address other startup strategy questions.

The AI Mentor is particularly relevant to the new generation of entrepreneurs who can build applications rapidly with AI but need help turning those applications into businesses.

It complements rather than replaces the broader 1Mby1M mentoring ecosystem, which includes live mentoring, research, case studies, and the experience accumulated through years of working with entrepreneurs.

From Building an App to Building a Business

The emergence of AI-powered app development creates an enormous new pool of potential entrepreneurs.

A founder can now build an application in days or weeks. The harder questions often begin afterward.

Who will pay for it? What is the real market? Is the positioning compelling? What is the right business model? Can the founder acquire customers economically? Is the opportunity a lifestyle business, a scalable startup, or something in between?

1Mby1M’s role is to help entrepreneurs answer these questions.

The organization’s focus is therefore expanding from helping founders build companies efficiently to helping the growing population of AI-built and AI-enabled startups develop the strategy required to become sustainable businesses.

Sramana Mitra and the 1Mby1M Methodology

Sramana Mitra founded 1Mby1M in 2010 after decades of experience as an entrepreneur, strategy consultant, author, and startup mentor.

She began mentoring startups through free online roundtables in 2008 and subsequently developed a methodology centered on helping founders build real businesses rather than optimizing prematurely for fundraising.

Her approach emphasizes:

  • Bootstrap First, Raise Money Later (or not at all)
  • Customer validation before fundraising
  • Building revenue before pursuing excessive capital
  • Capital-efficient growth
  • Repeatability before aggressive scaling
  • Strategic use of capital
  • Building value before chasing valuation

Sramana’s work has challenged conventional startup assumptions around venture capital, blitzscaling, fundraising, and the definition of startup success.

Research and Entrepreneurship Education

1Mby1M’s methodology is supported by an extensive body of entrepreneurship research, case studies, books, interviews, mentoring sessions, and educational material.

The organization’s research explores topics including:

The 1Mby1M Research library brings this work together in a structured collection of papers and related resources.

The research is designed not only to document entrepreneurship principles, but also to provide practical frameworks that founders can apply to their own companies.

A Global Virtual Community

Because 1Mby1M is virtual, founders can participate regardless of geography.

The community includes entrepreneurs from established technology ecosystems as well as emerging markets across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and other regions.

This global perspective is central to the 1Mby1M mission. The organization views entrepreneurship as a mechanism for creating economic opportunity beyond the traditional centers of venture capital and technology.

Founder Outcomes

The 1Mby1M community includes entrepreneurs who have built businesses ranging from bootstrapped companies to venture-backed startups and companies that have achieved significant exits or public-market outcomes.

Examples include Freshworks, DataPoem, CliniOps, and other companies whose founders have participated in the 1Mby1M ecosystem.

These outcomes reflect the diversity of paths that entrepreneurs can take. 1Mby1M does not define success solely by fundraising or valuation. Revenue, profitability, customer traction, sustainable growth, and meaningful exits are all valid measures of entrepreneurial success.

The 1Mby1M Philosophy

At the center of the 1Mby1M approach is a simple principle:

Build value before chasing valuation.

Founders should not assume that raising capital is the definition of startup success. Capital is a tool. Customer traction, revenue, profitability, repeatability, and sustainable growth are stronger indicators of whether a business is creating real value.

1Mby1M helps entrepreneurs build from that foundation.

Bootstrap First. Raise Money Later. Build a Real Business.

Alternative to Y Combinator and TechStars

Many of the core values and principles of 1Mby1M are in opposition to those of Y Combinator, TechStars, and other traditional equity-charging accelerators that operate as feeders into the venture capital eco-system. Blitzscale from the get go, Go big or go home, Unicorn chasing, compulsive and maniacal fund raising are typical in those milieus.

As such, they produce zombies and dead startups en masse. Nine out of ten venture-funded startups end up as failures.

1Mby1M proves that there is another way.

Testimonials

“1Mby1M is a very helpful program, and Sramana is very well connected in the industry. When we were looking to talk to investors, Sramana introduced us to multiple investors, and also acted as an advisor helping us navigate complex term sheet clauses like tranche financing and liquidation preferences. 1Mby1M also helped us win the $40,000 Microsoft BizSpark Startup Challenge Grant by helping us refine our pitch, market sizing analysis, and other details. I would enthusiastically recommend the 1Mby1M program for first time entrepreneurs and technical founders who need help with understanding other aspects of running a business.”

Girish Mathrubootham,  Founder & CEO at Freshworks – Raised $484 Million in Funding and went Public on Nasdaq with a $10B+ Valuation

“Working with the 1Mby1M team is perhaps one of the best decisions I’ve made on the spur of the moment. I was tracking 1Mby1M for a while and used to get their e-newsletter. I was always cynical about the pay to play model in the Bay Area. I tested the model quite late in our evolution on a whim and was surprised by everything. It was the best $1000 spent. I would strongly urge founders who are at the ideation stage to sign up – you will save yourself a lot of time, trouble and resources. Through 1Mby1M, I was introduced to Warren Weiss, a renowned former sales executive who worked with Steve Jobs at NeXT, and is now a successful VC in Silicon Valley.”

Dharmesh Singh,  Co-founder and CEO, Fullcast - Raised $4 Million in Series A Funding

“I joined the 1Mby1M Premium program in 2020 and had a very good experience interacting with Sramana. Her inputs during the private roundtable sessions added a lot of value; she addressed the exact objectives I had. She also made a number of valuable introductions. Overall, the program had a very positive influence on our journey.”

Abinash Saikia,  Co-founder of EnCloudEn, Acquired by Quantum Corporation in 2021

“The 1Mby1M program has been a phenomenal help to us. Within days of joining, Sramana introduced us to some key folks in the industry and helped open new doors for us. Her advice is real, focused, and actionable. I would highly encourage entrepreneurs, especially first-time entrepreneurs, to leverage the program. Many thanks for all the help, support and mentorship through the years.”

Vikrant Mathur,  Co-Founder at Future Today

“Working with Sramana Mitra and the 1Mby1M Premium program has been invaluable for Adya as a bootstrapped company to better understand how to best position the product and the company while working within constraints. Sramana has a very fresh perspective that promotes bootstrapped startups making slow, steady progress while rejecting the need for institutional investments. This also makes companies better targets for acquisitions. Thanks to her introductions, we were able to pitch Adya to the right companies at the senior executive levels. This led to, I am happy to say, an acquisition of Adya by Qualys! Without Sramana, this happy outcome would likely not have happened.”

Deepak Balakrishna,  Co-Founder and CEO, Adya (Acquired by Qualys)
